North Building
Seattle, WA
Designed by the Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership to complement
nearby historic structures, the North Building will terrace diagonally
down a hillside to allow full view of the striking Art Deco tower
to its south. The North Building's three interconnected wings will
range in height from four to six stories for a total of 220,876
rentable square feet of office space. Organized around a new west
facing courtyard, the building will feature two ground level entrances,
tasteful materials (brick, glass, and sandstone), and a modulated
façade.
Constructed of brick, glass, and stone, the North Building's staggered
levels and indented façade will create a mini-skyline reminiscent
of the campus' original profile. Seven colors of brick, mixed to
obtain an overall darker shade than that of the existing buildings,
will echo the colors and strong horizontal lines of the tower and
its 1992 north face addition. A combination of clear and tinted
energy-efficient glass will be used, with limestone similar to that
featured on other campus buildings.
A
29,000 square foot common green landscaped in a park-like fashion
will replace the existing surface parking lots on the northern portion,
resulting in more open space and trees. Composed of large areas
of lawn and a series of low-height walls, the plaza will be open
to both employees and the general public and will feature a paved
terrace for group gatherings and events. Paths through the new courtyard
will link the entrances between the North Building wings, providing
pedestrian access between the buildings and to the rest of the property.
